What is fitness?
An interesting question since even amongst elite athletes the answer is hardly ever the same. To a weightlifter it’s measured by how much weight can be successfully lifted. To a competitive runner it’s all about covering a set distance in the shortest possible time. What fitness is depends a lot on your perspective: who you are and the activities you pursue. What really matters is real world fitness for each of us, fitness you actually notice, fitness that you can use.
Why get in shape?
Because an improved level of overall fitness enhances everything you do in life from getting around a busy city everyday to playing a round of golf on the weekends, to long-term health, to just feeling good. Our overall fitness level has a lot to do with who we are and how we feel about ourselves throughout our lives.
Where to get in shape?
First and foremost, the gym should be convenient. Remember that the true value of any club membership is determined by how frequently it is actually used. Even the least expensive memberships, if used infrequently, cost more on a per visit basis. Also, the gym shouldn’t feel like a penalty box, it has to be a place you like to go.
